Radiation Protection and Environment Journal (RPEJ) is online and open access since 2010 in the form of journal. It was published in print-only form as “Bulletin of Radiation Protection” until 2010. The journal is managed by a nongovernmental organization, the Indian Association for Radiation Protection (IARP), and published by Wolters Kluwer. In brief about IARP, it conducts various certification training programs in association with Radiological Physics and Advisory Division, in the field of radiological testing, calibration, radiation safety in industrial applications, medical applications, etc., The location of the training programs, in general, is Mumbai, but also conducts onsite on specific requests. IARP conducts public awareness programs on radiation applications and benefits at schools, colleges, and at various places around nuclear facilities.
In the last decade or so, the journal has published 39 issues from 2010 to 2021 in about 12 years. RPEJ is a quarterly journal and was supposed to publish 48 issues in the past 12 years. The timeline of publication of issues is also lagging now, nearly by about a quarter. Although there has been some improvement in the timeline of publication compared to initial years, it desires and also is essential for it to maintain the schedule of publication. The publication of the number of issues per year and also the quarterly timeline is one of the essential components/requirements for obtaining indexation from various agencies.
The researchers from the Health Safety and Environment (HSEG) of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) consisting of several divisions were the main contributors of articles to the journal in the initial journey of RPEJ, but slowly the inputs from HSEG researchers is waning. Universities of India and other countries are now the major contributors. As the Chief Editor of this journal and also as a former professional of HSEG, BARC, I urge the researchers of various divisions of HSEG, BARC, to come forward and contribute scientific articles to the journal regularly for it to move up in the indexation process. I am well aware that tremendous research work is going on in HSEG and only a small part of the research work needs to be diverted to this journal and will be adequate to bring the journal timeline as per schedule.
As far as the geographical reach of the journal, there were few contributions in the form of original articles from advanced countries such as USA, Austria, and UK. There have been good inputs from universities of India. The journal publishes original articles, news and information, and book reviews in addition to editorials.
Editor once again requests researchers worldwide and particularly from HSEG, BARC, to contribute original articles to this journal for having worldwide access of their work. I also take this opportunity to thank my co-editors, reviewers, editorial board members, contributors, and also the former editor for giving me a very good support to bring out the issues of this journal. I also express my gratitude to the staff of Wolters Kluwer for publishing the journal simultaneously both in online and in print form and also for sending time-to-time updates to the editor.
