The so-called naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) waste generated in industrial activities (mining, oil and gas, coal ash, phosphate ore, copper mining, water treatment sludge, rare earths, titanium ore, etc.) contain enhanced levels of naturally occurring radionuclides and may be called as technologically enhanced NORM (TENORM) waste (EPA Guidelines for TENORM, EPA-402-R-00-01, 2000). The issue is becoming a matter of public concern. Public unawareness of this issue should not be seen as “blessing in disguise.”
National regulators also need to develop practicable guidelines for storage and disposal of TENORM waste generated in very large quantity in these industrial activities. After disposal cost study and safety assessment, specific regulatory guidelines may be required to make the TENORM waste useful in areas, such as road-filling, preparation of bricks for building nonresidential structures, and filling of old/unused mines.
